Bookings are officially open for this year's Christmas Mini Sessions, and I have to say, I think this might be my favourite set of sets yet (yes, I've said "set" too many times in one sentence, but that's how excited I am).

Every year I sit down months in advance and think about what will make this year's sessions feel special. Not just pretty for the camera, but actually fun for the little humans who have to sit still on Mummy's or Daddy's lap while I hide behind a lens making silly noises. Here's how I landed on this year's two sets. And whilst anyone who visited my photography studio in Gloucester will know that the space is cozy (tight!), I didn't let that stop me from bringing my silly little vision to life. 

Bringing Back the Baking Set (But Better)

Two Christmases ago, I ran a baking themed mini session and it was, hands down, one of the most popular sets I've ever done. The kids loved it, the parents loved it, and I loved watching tiny hands covered in flour trying to stamp out a Christmas tree shape with absolute focus and determination.

So this year, I brought it back. But I didn't just want to repeat myself, I wanted to do it properly. The kitchen is more natural this time, warmer, less "prop" and more "this could genuinely be Grandma's kitchen on Christmas Eve." Same joy, same mess, same proud little faces holding up a slightly wonky star shaped biscuit like they've just won Bake Off, just with a set that feels a little more real and a lot less staged.

That's really the whole point of it for me. I'm not after forced smiles at the camera. I want the moment right after a child presses a cookie cutter into dough and looks up at you like "did you see that?!" That look is pure gold, and it's what this set is built for.

The Bauble Arch: My "I Can Do Better Than That" Moment

This one has a bit of a story behind it.

I came across a photo online of a giant arch covered in baubles, and it was stunning. Genuinely, it stopped me scrolling. Then I looked closer and realised it was AI generated. Not a real backdrop, not a real set, just a very convincing image.

And something in me went, "right, well, I can actually make that."

So I went on a mission. I spent weeks hunting down baubles, literally hundreds of them, in every colour you can imagine, trying to find the right mix that would look rich and full rather than sparse and sad. Attaching every single one by hand took a ridiculous amount of time and patience I didn't know I had. My back will confirm this was not a quick job. Oh have I mentioned, I had 2 toddlers 'helping' me?!

But it was completely worth it, because when I finally stood it up and stepped back, it looked exactly like the picture in my head. Better, actually. My daughter walked past, stopped, and said, "oh mummy, that is incredible amazing!" and honestly, that was the moment I knew I'd got it right. If it impresses a six year old who has seen every set I've ever built, it's doing something right.

Paired with an elegant navy backdrop, the arch becomes the perfect spot for those slightly more formal family portraits, the ones that might end up framed on the wall or on this year's Christmas card. Hundreds of colourful baubles against that deep navy just feels festive without tipping into chaos.

What This Year's Sessions Look Like

Picture this: your little one walks in and sees a rainbow Christmas arch dripping in colourful baubles. There are props to explore too, a giant present, a vintage car, a vintage rocking motorcycle, and a ladder, so whatever their personality, there's something to climb on, sit in, or hold (yes, including giant baubles, because why not).

Then we move into the baking set, and this is usually where the real magic happens. Little hands get to roll out dough, stamp it with Christmas cookie stamps, and cut out their own festive shapes. Watching their concentration turn into pure pride when they hold up their creation, that's the bit I live for.

Both sets are designed around the same idea: natural interactions over stiff "cheese" smiles. No pressure, no forced posing, just kids being themselves while I capture the real moments in between. The bauble arch and navy backdrop give you that elegant, classic family portrait, while the kitchen lets everyone's personality run wild for a few minutes.
